A very political speech, one that seemed more of desperation then confidence.
Anyways, for those out there who think it was great, or don’t really know, or got confused by the conflicting ideas.
Tax breaks (credits), incentives, and investments by government are spending, new spending, as in that is new money that will be spent. There is no way he can trim the deficit, hand out all that money, and not raise taxes massively. And just for reinforcement, a tax credit is considered income for taxable purposes.
I would love to see a CBO cost estimate for all the various spending, incentives, investments he threw out tonight. You see, you can’t trim the deficit like he says he wants and still spend money like mad.
The basic of his speech’s domestic focus was control. Sure it was underlying, but you can’t do what he wants with out control. Telling businesses they can have a tax credit, but only if they do a certain mandate. Oh and i loved the dig at tuition skyrocketing, but waving it off by simply waving a magic wand. Saying he will limit government backed (or held) student loans to 20 to 10% of someone’s income sounds nice, but forgiving the balance after 10 to 20 years? What about capping tuition, putting the same kind of limits on what colleges and universities can spend the money on like he proposed for banks?
Sorry, this was a speech mostly about having it both ways.
Sure, I do have to compliment him for pointing out his merit pay for teachers, but he hd earlier waxed poetically about how his stimulus spending saved tens of thousands of teachers jobs.
Oh and he made a huge mistake in doubling down on Al Gore’s the debate is over on Global Warming since we now know that not only is what he tried to do in Copenhagen not legal, but the science used to propel the myth now known as climate change is in fact junk science and political theater.
There’s also the notion of freezing the budget, but not until 2011. After the 2010 spending binge. After another year of Congressional Democrats and their appetite for discretionary spending. And don’t forget freezing it now will include all their increases. Besides, one Congress cannot rule over another. A move like that would be unConstitutional, and too rigid to adapt if circumstances require.
He spoke of regaining the people’s trust, well he walked a long way away from that tonight.
Ugh, enough for now.
I will let the rest simmer overnight. A lot stood out to me.
