The Ad Cops, Interfering With Democracy
I am sick of the ads too, trust me, I can’t wait until you can watch TV again with out having your political beliefs called bad for America. Oh yes, Democrats have been calling Republicans anti-American, maybe not as clearly as that, but blaming every single negative thing on Republicans in just the last 8 years is close enough for the hand grenades of political campaigns.Â
Well the new media fad that is polluting the electoral process is the ad police. CCO does it. KSTP has even gotten into the game.Â
Yeah, they take a candidate’s ad and check it for truthfulness. In a way they are now inserting themselves into the process, not just reporting on it. In a way, they are telling people not to pay attention to these ads. They are also injecting themselves in the process to defend candidates from scrutiny.Â
Candidates should be able to highlight part of someone’s record or their statements. Candidates should also have to clarify their record if their opponent lies about it. This new media Ad Cops fad is a real annoyance. Not only do we have to be subjected to wall to wall political ads this time of year, now we have to see our local news take time away from sports and weather to cherry pick these ads.Â
And that’s really all they do. They take the attackee’s press release twisting the ad and do a news story on it saying the attacker mislead.Â
How about the news media focus on the entire record of incumbents and help inform the public of how they really voted and who they palled around with in Washington?Â
How about the local media focus on what the candidates will do if they are elected?Â
How will they solve the budget mess? Will they increase spending? Will they raise taxes? Will they support the military? Will they fund roads and bridges first, and mass transit last? Will they increase regulations on business? Will they raise taxes on business?Â
How about the local media gets back to reporting instead of playing the role of ad cops?

I like the Ad Cops routine. SOMEBODY has to do it, and it isn’t fair (it’s actually bad politics) to make the attackee defend against the lies of the attacker.
If the Ad cops would faithfully point out every lie in every ad, regardless of party, they would be doing a wonderful service for the voters and for our political process in general. One of my biggest frustrations, this year more than ever, it seems, is that so many Democrat ads just flat-out LIE, or at least give a terribly wrong impression on some matter of substance. For example, Obama still insists he can give a tax cut to people who don’t pay taxes– some 50 million of them. That’s a lie, isn’t it? Where are the ad cops? Obama says McCain will cut Medicare benefits and tax health care benefits from your employer. Both are true, but fail to mention that those will be more than offset by the $5000 tax credit McCain includes in his plan. That’s grossly and deliberately misleading, and ought to be illegal.
