  • An AAA LTE In Da Strib: Not An Energy Policy

Posted by Andy on August 8th, 2008

The Strib did run my LTE. And it is the top one in the online version.

    Not an energy policy

The author of the Aug. 8 Letter of the Day (”Don’t fall for this tired Republican tactic”) is upset that Republicans are poking fun at Barack Obama’s so-called energy plan.

What he fails to understand is that improving our vehicle’s MPG by 3 percent to 5 percent is not a long-term energy policy. Sure, it will save us all a few dollars at the pump, but it will not solve the long-term problem this country faces. That is a reliable energy supply.

Obama’s suggestions that we make our homes uncomfortable by adjusting our thermostats — harkening back to President Jimmy Carter urging us to wear sweaters some 30 years ago — and spend money at overpriced service shops to “tune up our cars” and inflate our tires are simply going to cost us money out of our pockets and still not solve our dependence on foreign sources of energy.

We need an all-of-the-above strategy, not some phony gimmick or Band-Aid solution that will not produce any new energy. Our government got us into this mess. We’re all paying higher prices at the pump and on our heating and cooling bills because it put a de facto ban on domestic energy.

Neither political party is innocent on how and why we got into this mess, but it is clear which party is trying to solve the problem.

Sweaters and tire gauges are great Father’s Day gifts, but they are a poor example of energy policy.
