  • Is It Minnesota’s Blue Tint, Or The Candidate?

Posted by Andy on June 24th, 2008

They can’t get enough volunteers for the RNC Convention.

Kjersti Duncan needs a little help these days — from 10,000 of you, actually — and the quest takes her all over town.

She was in the rain outside the Metrodome a few weeks back, handing out flyers seeking volunteers for the Republican National Convention, set for Sept. 1-4 in the Twin Cities.

Last week, she made a pitch at the Eagan Rotary Club, where one member told how his wife got bit by a bat and a motivational speaker offered career strategies.

Duncan has her own strategic goal: locking in enough convention volunteers while her counterparts in Denver, where the Democrats will hold their convention, have long since wrapped up the task.

I do have to ask if it just because of Minnesota’s current political leftness, or is it because loyal Republicans and conservatives are less then satisfied with our presumptive nominee. I know why I didn’t run for National Delegate at the State Convention, and it was because I disagree with the candidate. I have thought having this convention here was going to be a bad mistake from day one.

We have too much at stake this year in local and state politics. But the convention does need help and they did even reach out to me a while back. Sure I may be blacklisted by the State Party leaders for Blogging credentials, but ……

You can sign up to volunteer here.

Hey, what can I say? Conservatives must love the thought of Obama being in the Oval Office for the next 8 years.

And then there’s Jason Lewis who is going to be talking about “Smart Surrender” on his show today. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like Neville Chamberlain rising from the dust.

To bad you can’t really win by surrendering. I’d love the convenience of that. Imagine being able to tell conservative candidates: “No, I’m not going to vote for you, I believe ’smart surrender’ is a more effective strategy.” Then it’s right back to American Idol and whatever else is on prime-time TV.

I was interested in travelling to the Cities to volunteer, but the host committee was no help in finding a place to stay. All I got was a list of outer ring hotels.

Plus having to come for two different training sessions is too much - I can’t take than much time off work for a candidate that isn’t too enthralling.

      I thought about it.
      But nah.
Being there to watch my party commit suicide by nominating McAsshat is too much.
As I noted at A-S yesterday none of the casual volunteers at the Kline campaign will be working for McCain.
In fact I know of no McCain volunteers.
Republicans can be fired up about local races, but the Presidential candidate has demoralized the base.

The number one selling point of the McCain campaign:
“Look how bad the other guy is!”
see the first comment above for the latest example of this reasoning.

I volunteered months ago, but I have no desire to get anywhere near the festivities; that’s not my cup of tea. I’m doing it because, like so much of the Party’s work, it needs doing. I’m just amazed at the number of supposedly sensible people who think that, somehow, their fits of pique are going to somehow change the outcome of the convention, or matter one iota to the choice they will face in November. Why don’t you just go get the work done, and sulk on your own time?

    5. RLrepublican Says:

It’s not JUST the candidate, though that’s certainly part of it. The party has made it very clear that the endorsing convention is a farce, a formality, a self-congratulatory spectacle. If it were a real political event, I’d be interested in volunteering.

    6. J. Ewing Says:

Of course it is just a media show. So why did so many candidates for National Delegate want to run to “do something”? It’s a big opportunity to put the Party’s best face forward on FREE media coverage. So why not help make it a success?

    7. rbwalch Says:

I’m fired up to help with John McCain’s campaign and it not just because his opponent is a naive liberal. If you don’t want to look at McCain’s 100% solid record on free trade, or his strong stance on national security and the War on Terror, why not just look at his philosophy of judicial appointments?

There is a difference between the Supreme Court justices that McCain and Obama would nominate (and Obama will not have to fight to get his on the bench). We have at least one (Stevens) and up to three (Souter and Ginsberg, too) liberal justices retiring in the next four years. A conservative appointment would fundamentally change the direction of our country for the next 20 years. Remember: Sen McCain was one of the key reasons the Senate confirmed both Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito.

And we’re unhappy because McCain’s moderate on immigration and global warming?!? Really? Let’s look at the big picture.

    8. bmetzler Says:

And we’re unhappy because McCain’s moderate on immigration and global warming?!?

In addition, if we elect Obama, will his positions on immigration and global warming be more palatable to conservatives? If not, what do we have to lose by supporting the most conservative candidate on the ballot?
