What Are They Thinking?
Mark my words, Central Corridor will destroy St. Paul.Â
Faced with the choice of killing parking or killing traffic on University Avenue, St. Paul City Council Member Russ Stark on Wednesday evening said kill the traffic.
And it goes on. This is what tyranny looks like for those that don’t know it. These social engineers want to do some thing to feel good, but don’t give a damn about the need or real impacts on the area.Â
Stark’s bold idea is to eliminate one lane of traffic each way on four-lane University Avenue.
Yes, that’s right, they are going to rip up traffic lanes for this billion dollar choo choo.Â
Current plans call for trains running down the middle of University, forcing traffic lanes, in most places, to shift toward the curb, eliminating parking. Stark said in some cases sidewalks could shrink to narrower than 10 feet — a distance that would struggle to accommodate bus shelters, trash cans, trees, snow piles and pedestrians. Additionally, he said, the notion of traffic buzzing by along the curb threatens to undermine the pedestrian-friendly atmosphere the mass-transit plan is supposed to encourage.
DO YOU GET IT YET?Â
These people are not trying to solve problems, they are trying to control our lives.
Oh and does anyone really believe there is a need for bus shelters on University after the choo choo goes in?Â
If you do, I have a slightly used bridge that used to span the Mississippi for sale…. CHEAP.Â
Generations from now, our grandkids will look back at this time and wonder what the heck we were thinking.Â

You’re absolutely right.
You can’t add a service that a minority of people will use and remove a service (lane or parking) that a majority of people use. It just doesn’t make sense. Recall that when the light rail opened on 55 with little to no parking along it, people flooded the local neighborhood streets to park and use it. So parking is important. But you’d be hard pressed to find anyone sits on university for 10 minutes to watch the volume of traffic today and concludes that removal of a lane each was is anything other than nuts.
I keep asking WHO really wants this stupid train? It’s going to cost a King’s ransom, destroy whole neighborhoods, interrupt commerce, increase congestion and cost everlasting boodles of money just to keep running! For the cost of light rail, we could buy enough busses to run them a block apart for the next 300 years! C’mon, legislators, THIMK!
But mass transit just has to be good! Because it’s mass transit! Right?
These pols and the people who support this aren’t concerned with the details because they are dealing with “principles”. And those principles dictate that any form of mass transit is better than cars no matter what. There can be no discussion because that’s just a truism in their world.
