(I tried to clean up the formatting as best I could)

This is too true to be funny.

    What the heck happened?

The next time you hear a politician use the word ‘billion’ in a casual manner, think about whether you want the ‘politicians’ spending your tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

    A.
A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
    B.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
    C.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
    D.
A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
    E.
A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let’s take a look at New Orleans. It’s amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

    Louisiana Senator,
    Mary Landrieu (D),
is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number, what does it mean?

    A.
Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528.

    B.
Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans, your home get $1,329,787.

    C.
Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012.

    Washington, D. C .
    HELLO!

    Are all your calculators broken?

We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

    What happened?
    Can you spell ‘politicians!’

And I still have to ‘press 1′
    for English.

I hope this goes around the USA
    at least 100 times

Well, I gotta get my butt going and get to work so I can pay all those taxes.

Thankfully it is Friday, unfortunately I’ll be working this weekend too.

Interesting post. It shows the absurdity of what government has become. You should also add to the post the absurd cost of the Iraq war. The senate added another 165 billion to just get through the end of GWs term.
Let us be consistent. We either believe in limited government or we don’t. Both foreign as well as at home.
Andy, you write against large government, with one hand and with the other you write for it. Did I see that you are for the real ID? Do you like federal airport security? Are you thankful for Homeland Security? Do you like the Patriot Act. You are typical of so many people that really do not believe in principles.

You still have not answered why you are not over in Iraq fighting for our freedom???????????? Maybe that is another inconsistency on your part?

    4. George Judd Mowry Says:

While I am not found (to say the least) about the concept of a National Identity Card … had the opportunity to see them in use in a dictatorship, we are living in the post 9-11 World.

Accordingly, I am for the Real ID — and so will any Minnesotan who wants to use airplanes (instead of having to drive across country by car) starting next year. As to whether I “like federal airport security” and whether I am “thankful for Homeland Security”, you’d better believe that I am! Just can’t seem to recall another incident of terrorism since they were implemented. What’s the alternative … giving our country over to the terrorists? As to the Patriot Act … what a tempest in a teapot!! Even the ACLU and National Lawyers Guild can’t make a case that it has harmed American citizens.

It never hurts to live in the real world!

    5. LibertyFirst Says:

It is amazing how man’s fear clouds his thinking.

Why not check points on all highways? Show your ID to get into a mall, how about not being able to leave town until you have approved travel plans by Homeland Security. After all if complete safety is what we are after what freedom or convenience isn’t worth giving up. How about no privacy or 4th amendment rights? Maybe we could just allow the government to jail us with out due process? Maybe we need to give up our fire arms so the government doesn’t have to be concerned about us? I think that would make us much safer from the terrorists.

      G Mowry,
Wake up, this country has so many targets no amount of security will could stop it. Do you want a completely closed society. Remember they can’t keep drugs out of prisons. How do you expect an inept Federal Government to protect this massive land in such a way?

      Ben Franklin quote:
“Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both”.

    6. Andy Says:

Funny you mention closed society. Ron Paul is an isolationist. Meaning we won’t be stopping our enemies overseas, but rather at our borders…. or worse at our children’s schools, our malls, and our streets.

So what you’re saying the founders would support is to roll back the clock to before September 11th. Where we had an open society where we believed that if we just leave them alone, they’ll leave us alone. We’ll go back to just trusting that no one will highjack a plane, detonate a chemical bomb in a mall, or mail poisons to office buildings.

Yes I am sure the founders wouldn’t realize that the dangers and threats of war in the world no longer fight in bright red or blue uniforms, march in formations, bring their own bands to announce their arrival on the battle field, and of course have to take a 2 to 3 month trip via boat in order to get to our shores…….

Times have changed. Living in the ACLU utopian society you want, is exactly what the terrorists want. That way they have absolutely nothing to stop them.

Oh and if you’re afraid of anyone possibly getting your info, we better ban the internet, credit cards, ….

Sheesh, wake up and smell the 21st century…. Heck, try the 20th Century.

And yes, once again I am going to say that it just sounds wonderful to say stuff like that Franklin quote, but the reality of today just doesn’t allow one such feel good throw back dreams to the world of the 19th century.

Here is the quote of the day from our friends in Nazi Germany:

Nazi leader Hermann Goering’s famous formula for fascism:

“All you have to do is to tell them (the people) they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”

    8. LibertyFirst Says:

      Andy,
Man’s nature never changes. So circumstances don’t change that. What can change is foreign policy. Remember what was going on in the 90s. No fly zones over Iraq, bases in Saudi Arabia, still we had 911. Nonintervention was not the reason for them hitting us. Exactly the opposite. How much blood, money and civil liberties will you give up to be safe?
Why don’t you stop complaining about the left growing governments control over our lives and look in the mirror. Your attitude toward civil liberties is pitiful. You would have been a Tory during the Revolution.

Reagen pulled out of Lebanon after the Marine barracks was bombed in 1983. Was he a coward? He understood the futility of the middle east.
You have a lot in common with the fascist of the 20th century. Stop being afraid of people in the middle east and turn your distrust toward your own government which has much more power to do you harm.

Your political views being carried out by the Republicans are destroying the party from within. Keep up the good work and Repubs will have a hard time getting elected to be a meter maid.
