KTLK - Full Speed To Failure?
Posted by Andy on May 7th, 2008
I just realized Dan Conry is gone. He’s no longer on the schedule page.
There’s been a lot of turmoil at the station, and a few on air personalities are venting about management. We all know how AM1500 who used to own talk radio in this town imploded under a ‘format change’. They chased away a lot of the best talkers out there.
So is KTLK setting its sights at failure?
Conry was one of the most entertaining and engaging hosts in the Twin Cities. He was shoved into no man’s land at 5 to 7 AM. A time slot that even the roosters don’t listen to. What gives?
Update:
If anyone out there knows if Conry gets picked up anywhere else. Please let me know, I will gladly tune him in there when my schedule permits.

You just now realized he was gone. He’s been gone for a while.
As to why. You just now realized he was gone.
If you had been listening, then you would have noticed he was gone.
But since not many folks were listening, he is gone.
It’s a business.
Dan may be interesting to some, but he was not bringing in the numbers or advertisers.
Morning talk is rough.
To be honest - I would rather hear him at 4-6 instead of Jason.

Dan’s a nice guy, certainly one of us, but he just doesn’t have the mojo required for morning drive, the toughest assignment in radio. I don’t know if he picked the topics or management, but it was pretty boring radio from 5 to 7, very repetitious.

I could have sworn he was there last week. Now it is so early I rarely get a chance to listen, so I could be wrong, but I guess I didn’t hear of it. If anyone out there knows if he gets picked up anywhere else. Please let me know, I will gladly tune him in there when my schedule permits.
I thought/think Dan was a top shelf host, he just got shoved into a time slot no one can excel at. They don’t even do rating until 6 so he can’t exactly have numbers advertisers like since they only get half of it. And the messiah Obama could read his speeches daily and the numbers would still suck.
If you listen to the grumblings and with the looming sale of clear channel (?) It may mean that a station that outsources its weekday&evening content will be the last best hope for not gouging our ears out after an hour of the good neighbor or MPR.

I talked to Dan at the Tax Cut Rally and asked him how that shift was going. He said he didn’t like the early mornings. When I asked if there was any chance of him doing the 2-4 shift before Jason, I believe he said they were talking about options.
Sorry to hear that he’s off the air. I liked his style and sense of humor — and felt the evening shift was a better fit for him.http://www.residualforces.com/wp-login.php?action=logout

Dan was fired on the 2nd of May after his shift, they posted no podcast and Super Dave was released as well if the rumors I have heard are to be believed. the posting at the talkspot is from Bill Shnieder, Dan’s buddy with the great laugh.
The talk spot is all but dead compared to what it was months ago, the managment let the KFAN rubes come in and basically destroy any thread that was posted so all the people that posted there 6 months ago are elsewhere now.
As for not having commercials last I checked they paid sales people for getting those, you don’t fire the mechanic if the sales people aren’t selling cars. Dan basically did what ever they asked him to, moved for Jason, it was planned, gave an hour up for Hines, moved to 5AM, I would say he was a team player.
Fortunately I have the internet and know where I can stream Glenn Beck and other good hosts, Chris Baker hasn’t really rung the bell for me.

May 3 2008 in Blaine at the Beltway YR convention Dan gave the best speech I’ve ever heard. He got a standing ovation. I will miss him. Democrats hate him because he knows them all too well. Nobody believed he was really fired. We were shocked.
