  • Slates - 6 Of Good, Half a Dozen Of Bad

Posted by Andy on April 3rd, 2008

I have been pretty clear where I stand on slates. I don’t really like them, but in all honestly, they aren’t all bad.

Some BPOU’s and CD’s have their rules set in ways that make sure the people who are submitted for election as Delegates and Alternates to be ‘approved’ by the leadership, others have an open, ‘from the floor’, process. Both have their place, and a hybrid is probably optimal.

In truth, the leadership of a District does have the right to make sure the people going to represent at the next level are ‘of the same mind’ as the District as a whole. You don’t want someone to move on to represent you at the next level who doesn’t share your views. Much like how you don’t like being represented by a liberal Republican or Democrat in the Legislature or Congress.

But it is all about who wins the vote that day. I believe in ‘the best man or woman wins’ type of process, where all those qualified to run, get to. Those people should be elected on merit and presentation, not because of ‘who they know’.

There are a lot of slates being cast around right now in Republican circles for National Delegates. Some have the best interest of that District in mind. Others have powerbrokers in mind. And others yet, have nothing but trouble as an intended consequence if the listed people get elected and gain entrance onto the national stage.

I’m running for National Delegate this weekend in the 6th. Leadership here is not planning on a slate to distribute. Sure a few of us are running, I am on the 6th District Executive Committee as Anoka Vice Chair. But we’re not going to dictate who people should vote for.

All Congressional Districts will be electing 3 Delegates and 3 Alternates to the National Convention. The balance of our State Delegation will be elected at the May State Convention at-large. This weekend is the 4th, 5th, and 6th Congressional Districts. The 1st, 2nd, & 8th were last weekend. The 7th & 3rd are next week.

I’ll be posting my lit pieces later tonight or tomorrow. May the best man or woman win.
