February 23, 2008 – Great Day For Conservatism
Yesterday was a great day for conservatism in Minnesota. It was the culmination of a week when grassroots conservatism not only came out of hiding, but took charge. In SD49, Rep. Kathy Tinglestad’s home, she was refused endorsement and given notice. For all intents and purposes she can cast her last vote as a Republican if she votes to override the Guv’s veto on Monday.
SD49 with held endorsement indefinitely by a 2/3rds vote. And the beauty is that Reps. Hamilton and Peterson were there to help their fellow ‘squishy’ (R), and called Rep. Erhardt and told him not to come. He was on his way up. Rumor has it that Tinglestad may even vote to sustain the veto after the day, but the proof is in the pudding on that. Peterson, Hamilton, and Erhardt face their BPOUs over the next 2 weekends. (tee hee)
In my BPOU, SD51, we had a full turnout, and tons of enthusiasm. We started the day off with a great speech by Congresswoman Bachmann, who gave a great and firey speech that got everyone’s blood flowing early. MNGOP Deputy Chair Dorothy Fleming and I also gave great speeches that kept the energy high. It was a truly amazing day for us in SD51.
We had an endorsement battle for our 51A seat, but we hadn’t yet fielded a candidate for the B side. We’d been in contact with someone, but he wasn’t quite sure if he was ready. Regardless even our B side Delegation was full and revved up. Through the course of the day we had numerous elected officials, past and present, as well as former candidates encouraging him to run. When we did finally break into House Districts, we endorsed 2 great candidates, both of whom signed the Taxpayer’s League Veto protection Pledge. On our A side we endorsed Tim Sanders.
But the amazing point of our Convention yesterday was that we had tons of people who wanted to keep going. Our Senate District is a mess when it comes to logistics. We’re in 2 Counties and 3 Congressional Districts. Which makes electing Delegates to CDs and the State conventions a mess.
And for the first time in my time my memory, we had battles for Delegate elections to all 3 CDs. We have 20 Delegates to the 6th CD, and we had over 90 people running. A big thanks from me to all the Delegates and Alternates for patience and our SD51 leadership that were there yesterday to help dot all the Is and cross all the Ts. We really just need to roll with the punches and go with the flow. “Manage the chaos” is how I explained it to some.
SD51′s convention was a HUGE success. So was SD49′s. Congratulations to all the conservatives in Minnesota who took part in the last week in the grassroots revolution that may have just kickstarted our 2008 Election season with shot of adrenalin to the heart.
Speaker Seifert? If all the Republican BPOUs are seeing the passion and energy that we were in SD51, I believe it is possible to take the House back. Even if we do have to end a few dinosaur (R)s home with their hat in hand because they just don’t understand what it means to have that (R) behind their name. Dance with the one who brung ya.
Well, the dance floor is crowded right now with a whole bunch of conservatives who are tired of seeing people in St. Paul continue to throw their money at problems. If there are 90 votes to override the veto on the Transit Tax bill on Monday, there will be at least 90 Republican BPOUs fired up and ready for battle. The public is strongly opposed to massive tax and bureaucratic unaccountability increases, and the Republican Party of Minnesota is the only thing with the power to stop the tax and spend liberals, no matter what Party they are in.

One thing that’s definitely going to get hammered in the fall campaign is how the DFL turned a $2.2 billion surplus into a $1 billion deficit.
The other thing that’s likely to be a campaign theme is that the DFL defied the will of 80 percent of the Minnesota taxpayer in passing the transportation boondoggle.
I would phrase the battle cry differently– How can you spend $8 Billion to do $2 billion worth of road work?
