  • From the INBOX: That’s ‘Alex’ Not ‘Alec’

Posted by Andy on February 8th, 2008

A person I know who had a boyhood dream of making an appearance on Jeopardy took offense at my error on the host’s name. They also gave me an idea.

So Minnesota is going to go to the Democrat Presidential candidate in 2008, right? I mean is there really a chance to break the blue state curse with McCain vs. Hillbama? Oh sure we were toyed with to get out there and bustour butts in 2000 and 2004 since “we were in play” and “a purple state”, but I think we can put that whole theory to bed now.

After losing a Congressional seat, losing the Constitutional Officers, losing the chance to pick up a US Senate seat, becoming irrelevant in the Minnesota Senate, and barely clinging to the ability to sustain a veto in the Minnesota House, Republicans are an endangered species here. And it was just 4 years ago Party leaders were saying we would become the majority party……..

So what are the prospects for McCain carrying Minnesota and getting our 10 Electoral votes?  Slim meet none. (Sorry Timmy, you couldn’t even get more than 1 in 5 Republicans to vote for McCain in your homestate.)

And that brings me back the None of the Above idea.

What if rather than throw your vote away on McCain, again there is very little chance he could win Minnesota, and since the popular vote doesn’t matter in Presidential Elections, not voting for McCain wouldn’t really hurt his chances.

I’m spitballing here, but think about this with me.

The Electoral College is set up so that the winner of each state gets all of those state’s electoral votes. States get one Electoral vote per member of Congress. Minnesota has only 10, so it is a pretty worthless state to spend money fighting over. Especially when there are more than 10 votes which are real swing states that a Republican could pick up. The candidates need to get the majority of the 538 votes, or 270 to become President. (Learn more here)

What if Blue State Republicans didn’t vote for McCain? It wouldn’t hurt his chances based on the Electoral College, but would still send a message to the Party establishment and media types who anointed McCain as our candidate.

So, would a None of the Above in 08 write in campaign be worth it?

We wouldn’t actually be hurting McCain’s chances, but we could send a clear message that we disapprove in the candidate.

      Ahem…Bacon.

    2. Blurb Says:

“A vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain” was just a hypocrites way to sway voters to stay home and let Hillary/Obama become the next US President. Am I reading you correctly?

Maybe you should think about what you are doing and stop with the hysterics. This is POLITICS after all and you will need to compromise, you did it with Romney, so what is your real problem with supporting the (presumptive) nominee? Are you that much smarter than the rest of the Republican’s who voted for McCain?

My suggestion… Mental health assessment and some good quality meds.
