J. I think you are probably correct, and talking to some folks it sounds like Michele and John are both having no problems getting money - The only concern being the idiots the DFL put up may make voters complacent and the margins of victory won't be as large.

But the problem is, that is an assumption, and it is a reasonable position for the party leadership to try and save money until they get money. And with Norm still at the top of the ticket, money will be hard to raise for everyone.

So I still would rather have the right candidate have time to be chosen and get ready over the next two years, then pick the best we can do now. We might get lucky, but I would rather be sure than lucky.

That being said, it's hard to be too upset about Ramstad leaving.

Sam, that's pretty good thinking, but I'm still not convinced. The problem with GOP fundraising, I have it on very good authority, is that Republican donors are holding tight to their wallets to "punish" elected officials who depart from Republican principles. For example I hear statements like, "You will never see another dime from me if Norm Coleman votes to override the veto on SCHIP." Heck, I've even made such statements myself.

Point being, while I'm not sure it would work in a Congressional district race when we have RINO-itis in statewide races, I have a suspicion that a "true" conservative could tap a large pool of frustrated donors and do very well.

The catch is "a decently-funded."

Money is in short supply, so it is proper of the party to figure out a way to save some money now so that they can run a real campaign in two years and win the seat back for the Republican party.

So I would rather see Ramstad there for two more years then either a DFL win over a bad (short funded) campaign or worse yet a RINO Republican who is put up because CD3 thinks it doesn't have enough money.
The first option gives the DFL an incumbent, harder to remove and the second gives the DFL a permanent hold on the seat (since we are not supposed to remove RINOs)

So if the choice is Ramstad, a poorly funded Conservative or a RINO/DFL, I'll put up with Ramstad for two years to get the seat for 20.

Y'all have been saying that a solid conservative could win almost any election, and now you think only moderate/RINO Jim Ramstad can win? Make up your mind!

I have consistently said that a principled Republican, running a decently-funded and reasonably smart campaign (which we ought to know how to do by now) can easily win in a "swing" district like the 3rd.

Andy,
I have to agree with Party official on this one.

Yes Ramstad is as bad (equal to) a DFL in that office.

But by retiring now, he is forcing the State and National party to pour money into a race they should not have to worry about this year.
This is during a Presidential election that will have full moon-bats money doing the GOTV.

So not only has Ramstad betrayed the party for years, but his timing is his final act of party disloyalty.

Keeping him in there for two more years would give the party a chance to get a real candidate some money and name recognition for a full run.

Instead money that could be spent to help Michelle or the Presidential candidate will likely go to Ramstad's replacement.

A silly question, perhaps, but why can we not do BOTH? By all means we should wheedle, cajole, and bluster at our elected officials before, during and after they make a bone-headed vote, based on our most noble adherence to principle. But then we should should work like the devil and contribute 'til it hurts to get them re-elected, regardless, as a matter of supreme self-interest. If Hillary wins, and takes Democrats into Congress with her, WE WILL ALL DIE an agonizing and early death. For me, that trumps a little frustration here and there.
