  • From the INBOX: The Democrats Must be Loving This

Posted by Andy on September 5th, 2007

Given that Sen. Larry ‘Happy Feet’ Craig (R ID) is considering unresigning, this email from a dedicated reader of ResidualForces.com seems pretty pertinent. It came to me late last week, before he officially stated his intent to resign.

The Democrats must be loving this.

First Larry Craig gets arrested in Minneapolis.  Then the liberal media goes into all out destruction mode - labeling this guy as being gay, and being a pervert. No proof, no substance, just total unsubstantiated slander.  Now they’re digging up freaks from 20 years ago whop claim to have had sex with him - no proof, just allegations and inferences. The media feeding frenzy is so out of control that no one can believe what’s happening - so much mud so fast - gee it must be true.  Everyone instantly believes he gay, and assumes the worst.

Next thing you know, the Republicans strip him of his committee assignments (altogether proper for a disorderly conduct conviction) and try to run him out of town. Meantime, the Democrats and Geogre Soros’ of the world have to do is sit back and the Republican hand wringers and bed wetters run this guy out of town.  We sacrifice one of our own, while they sit back and laugh and throw cocktail parties in celebration.

Imagine if this was a Democrat Senator, this thing would be playing out totally differently.  No slander, no “rush to judgement”, and certainly not the urgent call to throw the “misunderstood Democrat” off a cliff.  Hell, they would be claiming discrimination against gays, and telling all of us that consenting adults are allowed to do such stuff. Some well intentioned bleeding heart moral-less liberal might even introduce legislation to prevent the Police from persecuting the gay/trans-gender-/bi-sexual community.

But no, the Republican gets roasted alive, and his own party deserts him and throws him off the nearest cliff.

In my opinion, Craig’s real crime was being stupid enough to plea deal this thing without a lawyer.  He tried to cover it up and keep it out of the press - he took the easy path and it ended up costing him big time (and the now the party will pay too) (just like our country will pay big time if weak kneed legislators surrender in Iraq just to win the easy re-election, buts that’s another tale).  Had Craig engaged an Attorney and fought, he would have clearly taken some pain and suffering - but probably would have avoided the firestorm and the “gay” label that’s been placed on him. He probably would not be totally destroyed, as he stands today.

Go read the transcript of his interview with the officers here.  I bet any good attorney would have gotten the case thrown out for them continuing to question him even after he had asked for an attorney, or for lack of evidence, or for selective prosecution, or vagueness in the statute, or some other technicality.  Craig was a fool for trying to go this alone and hush it all up.

The only conduct that was “unforgivable”, was being stupid enough to not get proper legal council.

I’m no gay rights activist.  I don’t condone his behavior, and I agree that at this point it is best for all concerned that he resign his post.  But in the evaluation of this event, let’s not forget the role the liberal media have played in this affair.  They slandered and crucified this man.  The sad part is, he and his party have made it easy for them.

Good points all around, but Craig may have proven he is too stupid to be a US Senator with this one. I personally think we need to hold US Senators, of any party to higher standards than we would for avergae citizens. After all, they are 100 of the 300(+) million (same goes for the 435 Reps). If they can’t do the right thing and handle things properly in their own lives, how in the world can we trust them to do their job in the US Senate properly?

    Thoughts?
