Did Ya See That Tim? Bush Said No

As Minnesotans are wrought with fear over how much MORE money will be siphoned out of their wallets in the form of a gas tax by state politicians under the auspices of ‘the greater good’, we got news of one of our Federal level politicians opening a second front on our hard earned money, when Rep. Oberstar proposed a Federal gas tax increase.
Well, thankfully Bush said NO, not until you deal with your spending problems.
Let’s hope that our Governor Pawlenty can also stand between taxpayers and the DFL agenda. All the DFL politicians want is to raise taxes and use the money for their pet projects. If this special session happens with out rigid and pre-agreed legislation, there’s no telling how many of the vetoed DFL bills will be re-passed. And unfortunately, there isn’t a vocal leader with the power to fight against the pressure to guilt Republicans into supporting a gas tax increase.
This is where I think that the State Party is lacking in what it could do. This is once again an issue where I’d love to see the Party leadership help push for our agenda. A majority of Minnesotans oppose a gas tax increase, that seems like one heck of a great way to open the door to potential new Republican voters. I think it is a big mistake for them not to have a stated public position for whatever reason.
This is yet another issue where the activists with in the center right movement in Minnesota politics are struggling to find someone to follow and lead us to our deeply held positions becoming the political reality in Minnesota. Another opportunity to grow the party, change minds, and win votes squandered.
No special session Mr. Governor. We can’t afford to let the DFL loose with our money. The Minnesota taxpayers are not made of money nor the personal ATMs for liberalism.
Oh, if there were only some place to find true conservatism online here in Minnesota where all the greatest conservative minds could be found under one single URL……
(Question for the ’smart’ folks, could the DFL controlled legislature vote on a veto override of one of their bills if called back for a special session? Or is there a time limit or something that prevents them from coming back after the regular session ends?)
