  • Gas Tax Increase - The Minority Position

Posted by Andy on August 8th, 2007

Only 38% of Minnesotans support raising the gas tax.

Governor Pawlenty and the Legislature seem ready to approve a gas tax if the money would be used to maintain roads and bridges.
But how would a gas tax be perceived by Minnesotans?
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS teamed up with Survey USA to find out.

Many politicians have called for the gas tax increase to shore up aging highways and bridges.

“This is really a call to action and this is a duty that we need to fulfill on behalf of the memory of people who’ve lost their lives,” House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher said.

But so far, it appears most Minnesotans don’t agree. Fifty-seven percent of people surveyed say the state should not increase the state gas tax. Only 38 percent say it should go up.

Of those who want a gas tax increase, 47 percent would prefer an increase of less than five cents. Another 35 percent say they would pay 5 to 7 cents. But few would pay more.

Shocking, the politicians are out of touch with the people. As I expected, a gas tax increase is not supported by most Minnesotans. In other words, politicians like Kelliher, Murphy, asshat Nick Coleman and the other tax increasing likes who think they are gODs, are in the minority in Minnesota.

And what is more heart warming for me, the higher the tax gets, the lower the support for more is.

My lord, it is almost like the people who support the currently elected crop in St. Paul (and lash out at those of us who disagree with and question their authority) are completely out of touch with the reality of Minnesotans.

Say no to a gas tax increase! There is no reason to support one. All that is required is to change the priorities in Minnesota Government spending, and get that back on track.

I encourage all of you to email the Governor a link of the survey. I just did.

One Response to “Gas Tax Increase - The Minority Position”

    1. Nordeaster Says:

Email sent. Way to stay on top of this Andy. You are doing a fantastic job and speak for a great deal of people from Republican activists to independents sick of getting squeezed out of more and more of their hard earned dollar.

I was speaking at length my friend John who is almost exclusively a lefty. We spar respectfully (think montanaliberal) back and forth on many issues, but he is fully against raising the gas tax. He understands the negative impact it will have on small business owners like tradespeople, cab drivers and the like as well as those that use their services.
