They act as a recruiting rally, a PR event (we stuck it to the man, you can too). Second, they cause us to burn money and energy that could be put to more economically productive uses, lastly these attacks push the useful idiots to work even harder to understand "what we have done to make these people want to hurt us" and to push all that much faster down the road of appeasement. Also, if successful these attacks can have a significant effect on financial markets. Think about their self-funding model. Mo blows up a bus, uncertainty rises, the price of oil goes up bringing more revenue to wealthy sheiks who fund the wahabi schools that produce more Mo's that blow up more buses, and so on. OK, I understand why Al-Qaeda blows up our soldiers, Iraqi soldiers, and Iraqi civilians. They're trying to push us out of Iraq so they can take over. It makes sense, if cold-blooded slaughter ever does. I also understand the train bombing in Spain-- it actually worked to get Spain out of Iraq. But what are these bombings in England accomplishing? The Brits have already announced that they're withdrawing. There is no earthly way that the Brits are going to surrender 1000 years of being British to a bunch of Islamist thugs.
