  • Carey Sends Out Email in His Defense

Posted by Andy on April 20th, 2007

Matt at MN Publius has posted an email that Republican Party Chairman sent out via his campaign email. I did not receive it myself, thus I did not leak it to him. I understand that it was not sent out to the State Party’s list as is claimed in Matt’s post, and was sent out via Carey’s own email address.

Here’s Matt’s lead in, and you can read the entire email and post on his blog.

A source has just sent me the full text of an e-mail that Ron Carey sent out to the State Republican Party’s e-mail list that addresses the scandal he finds himself at the center of due to Star Tribune’s recent story. And with Joe Repya nipping at his feet in the race for Party Chair, it looks as though Carey is scared enough to resort to using the Party e-mail list for damage control.

The e-mail’s starts: “Mike Hatch. Star Tribune. Smear Campaign. What a surprise!” Yes, I’m not quite sure how, but Carey actually attempts to blame this thing on none other than Mike Hatch! Talk about holding a grudge…

At any rate, if you want to read the latest manifestation of Ron Carey’s fear for his title as Chair, you can read the whole desperate e-mail below the fold.

Now again, it was not sent out to the state party list I am told just to (State Central Committee???) Delegates & Alternates who Carey as a candidate for Chair would have rightful access to, but it is an interesting piece people should be able to see. Especially those watching the race from the sidelines, but seeing bits and pieces of info so far.

I just believe people need to see all the information on this. Despite my angst towards MNPublius, I am linking to it. (Trust me if you are new to RF, I can’t stand those lefty bloggers and them me. The thought of collaborating with them makes me sick to my stomach.) Matt and I have come to a mutual agreement, “we agree on absolutely nothing”.

I just want to present people all the information, in this case Carey’s own defense, for my readers who are following the race here and may not know of MNPublius.

If Carey is not implicated as he says, then fine, people should be able to see his own words. That is why I am acknowledging their post.

I do have to toss in one little nugget of my own though. I am no lawyer, and I don’t play one on TV, but if Carey is ‘not implicated’ why does he have a lawyer?

    (Via the original Strib story)

But attorney Doug Kelley, who represents Carey, Marshall and the center, said, “I believe my client billed appropriately under controlling law, and pursuant to the individual treatment plans that they sent to the Department of Human Services.”

Is Doug Kelly representing just the Center, or have Carey and Marshall hired him as well? Is the settlement just with the Center that Carey was Chairman of, or all three? I think that is very crucial to know.

Go read Carey’s email, and the Strib story again. The closer I read the Strib story, the more questions and concerns I have that there may be something to this. What do brighter minds out there think?

Honestly, I just want to get to the truth of this so we can move forward in the MNGOP.

To add - you are not the only one that didn’t get the email. The Logical Husband got it, but I did not.

To be truthful, I don’t have a horse in this race yet. I can see the good points and the bad to both candidates. I intend to make my decision after I have had a chance to talk to BOTH candidates (at this particular point in time I have only spoken to Chairman Carey).

I’m a central delegate alternate, and I received no such email.

Even though I do believe we should knock our own when deserved this is not the way to do it. The AG and the Dems have been attacking us and our leaders for a while now. If he did something wrong lets wait until convicted before we hang him! Andy you really need to put your hate aside and leave Ron alone. If you want him out do it by pushing Joe and selling him. Because if Ron is reelected and people on our side have beat him up we really are in trouble.

MrTruth….I fully understand and appreciate what you are saying, but…..

IF there is an impropriety, the delegates need to know NOW before June 9th. You know if there is impropriety that the Star Tribune and the DFL will have a hey-day with it. Honestly, isn’t that one of the reasons why we jettisoned the previous chairman (because of the pending trial in Rochester - the one that Mike Hatch fabricated?????)

In this, the Chairman has a point. Mike Hatch HAS made a career of going after the chairman of the MNGOP. However, caution and prudence is in order. We can’t have a another 2 year jihad from the Star Tribune.

We need to take a sober, measured look at the facts - but weigh the fact that this is coming out of the Star Tribune

I think we CAN and probably will have another “jihad” from the Red Star and Hatchet. Just like the other jihadis, the only way to defeat them is to stand up and fight, not to try to “see their side” of the story and help with their attacks. What incentive do you think the Democrats and MSM have to get all of the “facts” out before June 9th? Absolutely none. They will drag this out as long as a few Republicans are willing to wring their hands and consider throwing one of their own under the bus. The best PUBLIC response is a united “We don’t care about your innuendos and smears. When this is fully and impartially adjudicated, we’ll take another look. Now go away.” What you want to contemplate, worry over, and belabor privately is your business.

      Good points as always JE…..

Ok, let’s stop blaming the DFL and the Strib. Board members of any organization can be held liable for the actions of the organizations they are a board member of. If this is a legitimate case, then let the chips fall where they may. If it is false then Mr. Carey should file suit for defamation of character, slander, etc…

    8. the Lady Logician Says:

Matt - you are correct, the board members are liable and if these charges are false…..

The problem is the timing of the release of this information. Chairman Carey is in a campaign for his position and this information could be very damaging to his race. Therefore the role of the press and the DFL is a point to be discussed.

It is better to find out about the active case now, then later.

I would like to return to the subject of the “Defense e-mail”. I did receive the email. I am an alternate candidate to the MNGOP CC. The party was notified by email on the 31st of March, which I received a copy of. In the past three weeks I have received campaign emails from the domain roncarey.com. I have never registered to receive campaign email at roncarey.com nor sent an email to the sender. How did the sender get my private email address?

For any MNGOP email that I care about it should come from mngop.com.

    10. J. Ewing Says:

OK, so let’s accept the purely politics-free idealism of looking out for the truth. Yes, Board members were ultimately responsible for whatever activities took place. But there is no evidence that all of them WERE aware of improprieties, and there is NO evidence that anything improper even took place, as I understand it. The only thing I see here is that there is a disagreement between the government who established this program, short on accountability and clear guidelines, and a private non-profit trying to do a lot of good within those soft guidelines. It’s like I say about taxes: they can accuse me of being wrong, and assess taxes and penalties, because they get to interpret the rules any way that suits them, but they cannot accuse me of breaking the rules, because nobody on earth can understand the rules, let alone “cheat” them.

I keep coming back to the same conclusion: Democrats have learned to sabotage Republicans by insinuating something ‘terrible’ about them– true, false or otherwise doesn’t seem to matter– at the best time to damage those Republicans politically, WITHIN OUR OWN Party. It seems not all of us have wised up to this dirty trick. When we do, we’ll laugh in their face and do what we want to do, instead of what THEY want us to do. In fact, knowing that they tend to target only the most effective Republicans, it seems like a vote for Ron Carey would be the worst thing we could do to Democrats, and I’m all for that.

    11. the Lady Logician Says:

Matt - the way I understand it, because chairman Carey is an official GOP candidate he is allowed access to the names and addresses of delegates. That does include email addresses. Ltc Repya was also given access to these names and addresses.

I stand corrected. Had I checked my snail mail before posting, I would have seen mail for Col Repya, Mr. Carey and some deputy chairs. Guess I better check the mail more often.

      J. Ewing

I can not accept the notion that the judge hearing the first case, and requesting the investigation, the then AG Hatch, the current AG, the US Attorney, the DFL and the Strib are in some sort of collusion to bring down the Chair of the MNGOP.

    13. Andy Says:

What do people know about the Attorney Doug Kelly?

I see the Center and Carey & Marshall have had a few changes of the years of this mess. Wouldn’t the same attorney be handling a single irrelevant settlement? The change seems pretty odd to me.

Oh and I flat out reject the notion of electing ANYONE to ANYTHING just because the Strib attacks them. That may be the flat out funniest thing I have seen come out of your keyboard JEwing. Really, that had me in stitches.

    14. J. Ewing Says:

Happy to help. Now if you would apply the same notion to NOT electing somebody to something, just because the Strib attacks them, you would be placing the Strib in their proper relevance. It would be an entirely different matter, of course, if the Star Tribune was a fair reporter of the news, who would NEVER, ever, publish something based on a leftist political agenda. And just saying that makes /me/ laugh.

    15. Andy Says:

Pat Anderson was endorsed by the Strib. Why didn’t she win then?
