  • Senate Defeatists To Have their Debate

Posted by Andy on March 15th, 2007

So the Senate Defeatocrats will finally have their day in the sun. They will be bringing a bill, co-sponsored by our own Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D MN), that will set a date for official defeat in the war on terror.

WASHINGTON - Democratic leaders managed after weeks of delays to bring a binding resolution to the Senate floor on Wednesday that would bring U.S. troops home from Iraq. But Republicans remained confident they could kill the proposal and the White House threatened a veto, raising constitutional concerns.

Democrats want the new proposal to supercede the 2002 resolution that authorized the Iraq invasion. It would restrict troop movements and set March 31, 2008, as a target date to bring troops home.

Minnesota’s Senators are on opposing sides of defeat in the war on terror.

    Klobuchar is pro-defeat

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who is a co-sponsor of the resolution, said, “This resolution calls for a responsible change of course in Iraq. We need an open, honest debate and we need to get this policy right for the sake of our troops.”

    Coleman is pro-victory

Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., who voted in favor of debate, said he plans on voting against the resolution when it comes up for a vote: “Without question, I do not support an arbitrary timeline for withdrawal — that decision should be left to the generals on the ground.”

I was worried about Sen. Coleman given his recent opposition to the Surge in Baghdad, but its clear he still has victory on his mind. I hope the success of Gen. Petreaus and his plan for securing Baghdad has relieved him and his worries. I also hope that Congress can send a message of support to the Iraqi government, that if they get serious about cleaning up Baghdad and the problem with the sectarian militias, that the US will be right there with them.

A-Klo on the otherhand, she’s been opposed to this war ever since she began her campaign for the Senate. If she had her way, Saddam would still be in power, why wouldn’t she want to make sure the US and coalition forces can’t possibly be successful in Iraq, let alone Iraqis be successful at democracy?

One Response to “Senate Defeatists To Have their Debate”

    1. J. Ewing Says:

I wish somebody would get hopping mad and “speak truth to power.” ANY talk of withdrawing troops without victory is going to get “our sons and daughters” KILLED! Every time the Democrats promise the enemy a victory, they fight a little longer. And if we DID pull out, do you think our barbarian enemies are going to let us just walk away, or will they be shooting at our backs and laughing?
