Coleman Threading the Needle better than Some (er- Me) Had Hoped?

(AAA’s note: This does not change my opinion that Sen. Coleman needs to support the Commander in Chief regarding the Surge and ‘resolutions’ being debated this week in Congress. I’ll admit it, his conservative approval numbers are much higher than I expected.)
Sen. Norm Coleman is doing a good job at representing Minnesota despite the claims being made by the DFL that he is too closely allied with Bush. Source: Survey USA, HT- MDE)
Coleman’s Approval Rating based on Party affiliation are:
Republicans- 74%
Independent- 52%
Democrat- 43%
Despite the hyperpartisan mood in Minnesota and the Nation right now, and all the news coverage of which DFler will run against Coleman, he managed to receive plus 50% support from Independents and an astounding 43% approval from Democrats. This could be an early warning sign to National Democrat leaders and DFlers that they choose wisely his opponent.
Amy Klobuchar somehow managed to portray herself as a moderate despite her partisan history and political record. I highly doubt that Al Franken and RT Rybak (et al) will have nearly as much luck doing so, even with the media advantage in Minnesota.
Its a poll on Congressional approval, and over 600 days from the election, but elections never end any more. We go right from one to another. Klobuchar will face the pressure of 6 years of a liberal party line voting record when she has to face voters again. She’s voted in lockstep with her party’s leaders and broken campaign promises already in just under a month.
Coleman has a 6 year record as a US Senator and so far as he approaches his reelection campaign, he’s seen quite favorably by Minnesotans as a whole. As my note at the top does say, I hope he doesn’t let me and the other conservatives who support the commander in chief down, but over all it is hard to admit that he has done a favorable job to most Minnesotans.

What mildly concerns me is that Coleman has ONLY a 74% approval rating among Republicans.
I’d have thought it would be higher than that. I wasn’t expecting it to be in the 90’s but certainly more than 74%.
Does Coleman have some fences to mend in the GOP? Why? Is it his ANWR votes? Or something else?
