Let me say that enlisting now is really a brave thing to do(during any war). When I went in, we had the buddy system(go in with your friends and actually stay together), choice of jobs and no war at first. The Gulf War was over before anyone could scream “just like Vietnam!” and I woke up to “we didn’t start the fire” by Billy Joel every damn morning. It was like an extension of college.

Hell no I don’t know better than the recruiters. And while I’m at it, let me say that if Andy went right after he left college he would have found some criteria requirements that seem to have disappeared now (including a high school diploma. GED’s are welcome again). Our Gaurds and Reserves are having a tough time recruiting now, that I know. I also know from those who are serving right now that they can use some recruits.

Give it a shot, what has he got to loose?

Flat feet is one possibility DJ. My father volunteered for Korea. He was turned down because of his flat feet.

USMC 1/9 “The Walking Dead” (under a different President Bush). His economy sucked too and many college age kids and grads were signing up.

Andy, there are short Marines. There are also short sailors, soldiers and airmen (maybe not airmen). But, at a time when Reserves and Gaurdsmen are seeing combat, you have your choice. Also, they are taking new recruits up to age forty. You agree with this war and think its still the right thing. Our Commander in Cheif agrees with you. Since you won’t be in Congress anytime soon (to actually cast a vote that matters- or fund the war), your ‘civilian’ status is doing nothing for the mission you support. You and your buddies still got time to sign up and grab a rifle and protect us.

You know in England the heirs to the crown themselves are itching for combat and are in the military. If Prince Harry can go why can’t you? Hell, if the Royals can serve (many more in their extended family) why can’t our elected officials with military age children allow the same sacrifice? Forget it, this conversation is going to dive into my raw dislike for W. He ran, when he could have served. I don’t care what Kerry, Gore or Clinton did. Bush got a fucking pass.

If it makes you feel any better, the Marines rejected me due to height to weight ratios.

And I am not giving any orders, just speaking my mind, like I am allowed to in this country. Like it or not, we both have a right to speak here, thanks to what our brave men and women in uniform.

I believe very strongly that our forefathers knew what they were doing when they gave us civilian control of our military. Sometimes tough decisions need to be made for the good of the country. Looking at the way Murtha flinches at every military action is proof that he can’t make the tough decisions. Remember he was advising Clinton during the 93 Mogudeshu blunder. hmmm, what country is dealing with Islamists al Queda types right now? Who were we fighting in 93?
