How can current social security benefits ‘belong’ to the retired, but taxes being collected currently not be ‘belong’ to those paying it in?

Think of a chain letter.
If you’re one of the first participants, you get a letter in the mail with $20 in it. You can hold it in your hand. It “belongs” to you.
If you’re one of the later participants (say, #150 through #98,329), the letter never shows up. You have nothing in your hands. Nothing “belongs” to you.

You’re obligated to pay Social Security taxes, but you have no property rights to benefits. See Nestor v. Flemming (US Supremes).
