Ted Kennedy is a Big Fat Liar

Sen. Ted Kennedy is a big fat liar. He writes over at the Huffington Post about his interpretation of the Bush administration’s post Katrina response.
One year later, hundreds of thousands of families from New Orleans and the Gulf are still without jobs and unable to return to their homes.
One year later, the administration has used less than half of the $110 billion in federal aid approved by Congress to help people rebuild their lives.
One year later, families in New Orleans are still waiting for trailers to live in and for demolition and clean up crews to clear their neighborhoods so they can rebuild their homes.
One year later, half of the city’s hospitals remain closed and less than half of the New Orleans public schools plan to reopen this fall.
Well what ever happened to Mayor Nagin? Is he sitting in the corner with his head under the desk again? Governor Blanco? Are there crocodile tears screwing up her mascara again? Has anyone seen her lately? What about the $77 billion dollars that Bush has allocated to the region, of which only $33 billion has been spent?
So once again, the Democrats are covering for the dismal local governmental performance of their fellow Democrats. You wanna know why Katrina was so bad? A big frickin hurricane hit an area that had been trusting the Democrats in charge of keeping them safe. Those Democrats squandered and pillaged the money given to them in order to protect the citizens of New Orleans.
And when the you know what did hit the fan, those same Democrats were the first people to cut and run. When the going got tough, the Democrats did nothing and blamed Bush.
So here is a question. If the Democrats take Congress in 06 and the White House in 08, who will they blame when things go wrong?

Your quotation has only one mention of the “federal government”. So I can only assume you instinctively think they must be the natural failings of the lack of leadership. anyway,
if Bush had put his presidential weight behind things, more people would have been fired now, and a lot of efforts would have become streamlined, wondefully executed and well managed. after all is he not the “commander in chief”? just asking.
what is wrong in asking the president for help?

Bharath, there is nothing wrong with asking the president for help. But it is preposterous to then pin all of the blame on him for the inadequacies of the response. The responsibility for rebuilding the region belongs to the region. I’m not sure how much of the approved money has been spent, but the federal gov’t allocated several times the amount of money for Katrina relief than they have for any other natural disaster in history. The problem lies with the local and state governments that are too inept to make any amount of money useful.

Bush can’t fire a Mayor or Governor!
Commander in Chief refers to the military abroad. The President can’t actually use the National guard unless the Guv. of a state allows him to. Until federalized, they are not capable of it, that was why Arnold (or one Guv) caused the brewhaha by threatening not to let the Nat. Guard go to the border.
Read your bleeping constitution once. You might learn something.

Ben:
over $100 billion allocated by Cong.
$70 billion some has been released by Bush to the Region.
$33 billion has been used by the leaders in the region. IE bleeping Nagin and Blanco.

I agree with this post. If the democrats get into power they will continue to blame the republicans when things go wrong because that is the democrats job. Their job is not to create results but to criticise and complain then line their own pockets. Ever notice how the most blighted parts of the country are often controlled by democrats. Of course it doesnt help that the media will also get in on that bandwagon which just amplifies the blame.
One of the biggest mistakes was that there was not a unified command between the Mayor and the Governors office. They were still bickering over how to help the people of New Orleans. There have been many rumors about what was or wasnt communicated. The most glaring mistake in this process was that decisions were not excuted when needed. I heard that Pres. Bush considered taking control of the situation but did not want to undermine the authority local and state governments. There are constitutional issues here as well because this was not considered a national security issue like 9/11 where the feds would be the lead agency. Interestingly enough Alabama and Mississippi the other states effected are much further along which both have republican governors.
I think that this is a glaring example of why democrats continue to struggle to gain the confidence of the American. There are virtually no republicans here so you cant blame them although as has already happened they blame Bush.
The LA congressional delegation should be taking some responsibility for this as well since they should have been asking for more money for the levees instead of for pork projects in other parts of the state.
