  • Path to Citizenship, a Duck by Any Other Name…

Posted by Andy on May 29th, 2006

The House Republicans may actually get it on immigration.

WASHINGTON — The Senate plan to provide illegal immigrants with a shot at citizenship probably is a deal-breaker that will prevent passage of a compromise on immigration overhaul, the House’s lead negotiator said today.

“The words ‘path to citizenship’ is a buzzword for amnesty. We ought to be honest, it is amnesty,” said Rep. James Sensenbrenner, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

The Senate bill passed last week would tighten border security, offer a guest worker programs to bring in new foreign workers and provide a chance at citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants already in the country.

Correct me if I am wrong, but non-US citizens do have the opportunity to become citizens already. Isn’t it called immigration. And doesn’t it have a process set up for them to be here legally?

Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., said the Senate took a comprehensive approach to dealing with illegal immigration and he took issue with Sensenbrenner’s characterization of the Senate’s approach.

    “Amnesty. That’s nonsense,” Hagel said.

No, you not seeing it is Amnesty is non-sense.

Hagel said the Senate bill would require all immigrant workers to have a tamperproof identification card. They would not be allowed to get a job without it. He said the United States cannot ignore their existence by just focusing on border security.

Um, Mr. Hagel, there are 11 million people who already ignored the requirements and and laws to get into our country. What possibly makes you believe that they will now, all of a sudden, follow your new amnesty rules.

“To just walk away from it and say, ‘Well we’re going to enforce our borders first and then maybe we’ll get to the rest of it,’ we fail the American public,” Hagel said.

No, Mr. Hagel, to give the privilege of being an American to someone who stole it in the first place would be failing the American public.

America is America’s, yes we welcome people to join our family, but we do not owe each and everyone of them a place at the table.

We are either a Nation that believes in the rule of law, or not. Rewriting a law to forgive a particular part of society for political purposes is down right and abuse of power.
