I Thought it was over & Question
Posted by Andy on March 27th, 2006
The aftermath of conventions. Endless paper work and record keeping. Insanity is very near. Hopefully I’ll be back to regular posting practices soon.
My apologies.
While I’m gone though, I’d be curious if anyone would care to see me post my thoughts on the 6th CD GOP Candidates. I’ve been debating on whether or not I should post my personal reactions/thoughts/feeling on each of the 4. I’ve been going through the pros and cons of each candidate in my head, and more importantly of me posting it here, given my positions in the RPM. I’m not talking about endorsing a candidate, but rather my observations of someone close to the action. I’ve really been holding back on things, and I’d love to get them off my chest now that my BPOU convention is over.
Any suggestions? Good idea? Bad idea?

My two cents: Keep it private. I can appreciate your frustration. Take the high road. The person you are angry with may be a potential ally some day. You did your part to provide a fair process. We ran one hell of a professional convention on Saturday. Focus on the positive and build from there. It’s about winning the 6th Congressional District. And SD51. And HD51A. And HD51B. And more than that. It.is.all.good.

Wait, this would not be a dirty laundry bitch session. this would be an objective (well as objective as a blogger can be) analysis of the different candidates and their strengths and weaknesses. - Why I think they’d be a good Congress person or not, and what I’d like to see them doing next year in an office if elected.
I’d be leaving all the behind the scenes ’sausage making’ out of it. I’m professional enough to keep personal issues I have with campaign staff to myself.
My point would not be to abuse my position, but rather give my 2 cents as a Delegate in the 6th CD who because of this blog has been keeping a close eye on all 4 Candidates.
Strengths, weaknesses, and issues. That would be it.

As a blogger, chair, and delegate (not always in that order), it is impossible to keep them separate. You can wear all three hats at once by focusing on what the last one standing can face and should be doing to win. They are four truly very good candidates. Too bad we can’t convince them to move to separate CD’s. I have my preferences but, for the most part, keep them private, though I don’t have a dog in that fight. Praise them all publicly. Leave the rest on the cutting room floor. The remaining three still have great careers still ahead of them. All future allies.

I am interested in hearing your analysis Andy. Please entertain us!! I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the behind the scenes as well, but I think that is asking too much…

Andy,
I think some measured analysis would be fine. There is a fine line that you would be dancing (as we talked about last night).
I believe that one of the few things Reagan was wrong about is the 11th Commandment. It has since been used by the crooked of the party to try to get internal immunity. If you also disagree with the 11th Commandment then give us the objective pros & cons.
Otherwise consider this. What you don’t say might be more important than what you do say. Give us the pros of the candidates…the pros that you see as true. For example, it would be a pro if a candidate is a “grassroots candidate”, but if you do not believe this candidate to actually be supportive of “grassroots” then do not list that as a good point from the candidate.
I know how hard it is to keep inside the views on the candidates. This is why I refused the offer to be in any executive position in my BPOU. Wearing the multiple hats is a bit limiting. With members of my family being limited in their Free Speech because of the Hatch Act there has to be at least one mouthpiece. Whatever you decide I would advise it being very measured, very objective and more factual than opinion. The ACTUAL behind-the-scenes events I think would be much more beneficial to the public than anything else.
IMHO.

Andy,
I would advise caution in giving your opinion, especially in your position as a Member of the 6th CD Exec. Comm.
Eash member of the 6th CD Exec. Comm. is expected to maintain thier impartiality until the endorsement is given by the convention, to insure that the endorsement of the 6th CD is not tainted by undue influence. Otherwise, it’s impossible to hold the candidate’s to thier promise to abide by the endorsement process, if there is the slightest potential of mischeif in any facet of the convention.
(I already have that commitment to abide by the endorsement process, in writing, by all four of our 6th CD candiates)
Just some helpful insight from a fellow BPOU Chair, who is also a former 6th CD Chair, among other positions currently, or in the past.
thanks
John Mc.
