  • UAE to Retaliate - I Warned ya!

Posted by Andy on March 9th, 2006

Congrats everyone who opposed the UAE deal, you’ve done it! You have successfully made us an economic enemy. DP World, is backing out.

What comes around, goes around, UAE to retaliate.

Dubai is threatening retaliation against American strategic and commercial interests if Washington blocks its $6.8 billion takeover of operations at several U.S. ports.
As the House Appropriations Committee yesterday marked up legislation to kill Dubai Ports World’s acquisition of Britain’s Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation (P&O), the emirate let it be known that it is preparing to hit back hard if necessary.

It was your’s truly that warned of this when this whole hyperventilation happened.

A source close to the deal said members of Dubai’s royal family are furious at the hostility both Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill have shown toward the deal.

I’d be furious too if I was being singled out on the basis of ethnic or religious beliefs.

Retaliation from the emirate could come against lucrative deals with aircraft maker Boeing and by curtailing the docking of hundreds of American ships, including U.S. Navy ships, each year at its port in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the source added.

When those businesses and industries are affected by this retaliation, let it be clear who is to blame. Congress will have caused the job loss. Congress will have caused the economic downswing. Congress will have caused the drop in US exports to the region. Pay attention America, it was Congress, not Bush that will have caused this.

Politicians have got to remember that the Air waves they count on to win public support and reelection get broadcast overseas as well. And when they lash out, and in this case bordering on racial profiling and xenophobia, there will be consequences.

For as long as this debate has gone on, those opposed to the deal have made complete fools of themselves. Politicos and pundits alike must have slipped a few discs in their backs from their violent convulsions on the floor, like fish out of water, attempting to justify their knee jerk, racist decision. Yes, racist!

While the members of Congress have been busy bending over backwards to impress the electorate, and finally ‘get security’ for the voters to see, they have done so with complete and total disregard for US Foreign relations. That is right folks, Congress is the who have tarnished the US Flag in the eyes of a foreign nation, not Bush. Not Cheney. Not Rove. Not the use of force. Not being in Iraq. Congress!

It was the hate filled and short sighted words of members of Congress that have poked a stick in the eye of a Muslim nation. For all of their claims of Bush being bungling foreign policy, one would expect these Congressmen and women to have the knack for it themselves, since they were so boldly pointing out ‘how to not do it’. They have been creating a steady drumbeat for months and months that they, not the President, should be the ones trusted with setting our foreign policy.

Well I guess my concern with the Congressional power grab of late were merited. Congress is no place for decisions as big as this. They showed their complete lack of competence and perspective on this one. They saw this as a way for them to improve their own poll numbers, but unfortunately it is the US as a whole that will be getting the shaft of it.

      The Port Deal…

So it appears a deal has been made that pretty much benefits everyone on both sides, some more then others:
WASHINGTON — A United Arab Emirates-owned company said Thursday it would give up its management stake in a controversial ports deal that has t…

      Andy,

AMEN! I think it was a BAD IDEA to oppose this deal. I think the security arugment was a weak one. Basically saying (Congress that is) that they, themselves, are a failure (not having the right laws, etc…).

Furthermore, the more congressional republicans start separating themselves from the president and give the hostle media ammunition, discourse amoung republicans, I think they will pay the price in November. My gut instinct is no matter what the presidents poll numbers are, they are 1) caused more by the congressional republicans and their so called new founded independence; 2) getting back in line with the president, becoming unified, will help come november. We are the party of ideas and if unified we can win. The way this port deal played out, in the end, will be a disater for congessional republicans and the US
