Me and Pawlenty and Politics and a Rant
Posted by Andy on January 31st, 2006
I was just asked what my relationship is with Gov. Pawlenty. My first answer was that I don’t have one with him. The second is that I know his campaign does not like me or this blog. The last part, but the more substantial one was this:
That Pawlenty had better soon realize that he cannot occupy the middle of the political spectrum. There are already candidates camping out there, and there are too few votes there to matter. He was elected by conservatives in the first place. He had better soon realize that.
His recent bonding bill suggestion will be his downfall I fear. Chalk full of handouts before any of the punks in the Legislature even get their grubby little hands on it. It is already almost as big as any bonding bill has been, you really think that 201 Legislators aren’t going to cram everything under the sun for their districts into that thing? We’ll be lucky if that bill doesn’t reach $2 billion dollars, let alone a billion.
And that gets me to the main sticking point I have with him. Big Government! That is what I think of now when I see the name Pawlenty. (Plenty of Government). I have said it before, and I will say it again, ALL Elected Republicans that thought the 2004 election was about Minnesotans saying they wanted more and more Government are dead wrong. You were out bluffed by the DFLers plain and simple. (Oh and there was terrible campaign coordination.)
That election was about how the GOP was a weak and fractured assembly of different campaigns, not that our message was wrong. Far from it. Do you really think that people want the governemnt to do everything for them? Oh sure there is support for some of the Big Government innitiatives, but there is no alternative to them being offered. mRather than fight bigger government, Pawlenty is putting forth bigger Government with his own spin on it.
My problem with Pawlenty is not that I dislike him. It isn’t that I think he has been a bad Governor. I just think he has forgotten some of his GOP roots.
The reason I am a Republican, and not a Third Party person is that I want Government to be small. I am active in the GOP because that is the only way to really make a difference. Oh sure I could stand on my principals and screech from my basement, but all I would be doing is talking to other people in their basements.
As a member of the GOP, I am able to reach many more people, and actually affect the change of my World. By being part of a major party with or near majority status, I am able to get what I want into policy. You cannot do that from the bleechers or teh basement.
I am a Republican, because I believe in 3 very basic ideas.
Small Government- I believe that Government is in fact the cause of most peoples’ problems, in fact Government is a barrier to progress and self determination, and that is why I want it to be as small as possible. A small government does not, rather cannot get involved with every factor of one’s life. Be it the kind of car one drives to marriage to beginning or end of life decisions, a small government cannot make your mind up for you.
Security- I beleave that America is the greatest power for good and freedom in the World. I believe that no one else besides America will or can really fight the true evil we face today. I want my goverment to do whatever is needed to stop evil, fear, and terror from ruling the world, let alone my nation. I am a proud American, who stands behind his country, not across from it casting stones at her feet at her every move. Be it from local responders to deployed military, the Democratic Party and liberalism is more of a disease. The military is seen as an enemy whenever it is doing what it was designed to do. It is used as a guinnea pig or for social studies projects to test out liberal policies, be it peace keeping/humanitarian missions, to “don’t ask don’t tell”. Then you have people like RT Rybak who is allowing the City of Minneapolis to be over run with gangs just because he’d rather spend millions of liberal pet projects like LRT and greenways than hire more cops. Then you have Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar who has never seen a white collar crime she didn’t prosecute, meanwhile there is a revolving door policy for street thugs and gangsters. She won’t even let the Gang Strike Force ID themselves in court for fear of jury tampering. My gosh, her liberal ways give the criminals more rights than the good guys fighting crime and evil.
Values - I know I know, this has lost its meaning recently since the left has just claimed to have values, with out even saying what they are. Oh wait, howard Dean said that Americans just valued the wrong values or something. I think it is good that someone goes to Church, any church. Call me a hypocrit, since it has been months since I went to mass, but I know that the people that do go are better people than me. I like the fact that people pray. I like that fact that some Republicans (and a majority of Americans) value the family and life above the self satisfaction of feeling superior. To sum it all up, liberals and Democrats do what makes themselves feel good, conservative and Republicans do what is good.
So, Pawlenty and I are not enemies. We don’t always agree, but I sure wish we did. I think he is leading us to bigger government in ways that only Democrats used to. I think he is doing it because he thinks he has to to win. I’d like him to remmeber what he did to get elected in the first place. “Remember the Spending Problem” ? Must be something in the water on Summit Ave.
I hope Governor Pawlenty gets reelected. Let me correct that. I want the Pawlenty that used to agree that government was too big to get reawkened and reelected. I fear that if we don’t stop the growth of government that we’ll have no choice but to have repressive tax increases that would squelch any and all growth in the private sector, thus forcing government to get bigger to take care of more people. It is a cycle that I feel will be an end to us.
Just look at Europe, oppressive taxation, limited freedoms, and constant fear from immigrants taking over their country and ways of life. I’m sick of the socialized energy policies, which fail where vere tried, But have become the norm. Ethanol is junk science and a complete joke, meanwhile we are investing heavily into it, and what happens? Our energy prices skyrocket. Gee, I wonder why? (Tampering with the free markets by chance? Noooooo, why would mandating/regulating a product that is a direct competitor to another, taxing the original one to subsidize the other, and then imposing extraordinary policies and restrictions of growth so that the original one cannot grow to meet the needs. AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! Why would our energy prices go up when we refuse to allow the source of our energy to increase with demand?)
Open up your eyes everyone. We are about 30 to 40 years away from becoming just like Europe, another failed society. We can either stand up now and fight against everything that its chipping away at what we think is best for America, ourselves, and our fellow man or we can just roll over and get in line for our welfare check hoping to not have it stolen from us.
Limited government and personal responsibility are 2 very important things that we need to get back to. It is time again for people to take charge in their own lives and forget about the government doing it all for them. It is time for people to take care of themselves and each other, and leave the government out of it.
I believe those who cannot take care of themselves, should be offered care, but care should not be offered for those who refuse to care for themselves.
The political spectrum is more of a pryimid than a bulge in a 2 dimensional line. It is impossible to ballance yourself on the top of a point for too long. Pawlenty needs to pick which side of the Mountain he thinks will give him the best support and stick with it. Not bouncing back and forth over the mountain’s peak. My advice to him would be to get back out with the common man again. And by common man, I mean the Republican activist. I’m afraid that he is too worried about facing tough questions, so he avoids the ‘one on ones’ with us now. Rather than be questioned by us personally, he chooses to have only large crowds with impersonal contact. So he doesn’t ever have the chance to get feedback. It is almost kind of like his advisors are surrounding him with ‘yes men’ and loud applause, not the reality that is Minnesota.
This rant was kind of all over the place. Hope it made some sense to someone. I’m sure the people that think moderates will rule the world will be commenting up a storm. That is all they can do, since they have nothing to do but bitch about everyone to the left and right of them with all the ideas.

Ditto…and just to give a face to the example, the tax code in this state may actually push us to move elsewhere as we found out we are in the top 20% income earners…somehow 2 above average jobs in this state is in the top quintile.
The tax code is already oppressive enough that I will be turning down a promotion because it would result in us having a LOWER net income.
The days in Minnesota may be coming to an end…and Pawlenty sure as hell ain’t the answer to keeping our contribution to growth in this state.

You say Pawlenty was elected by “conservatives.” I disagree. He was elected by “conservatives” along with a big pile of “centrics”. Without those “centrics”, he was dead in the water.
I suggest that your path and paradigm will result, not in a small government, but a small role in government for us conservatives. This is Minnesota. We do need to compromise in order to have any effect.

I sure as heck hope not, but my fear is that Pawlenty is “going native”.

It really does not matter who elected him. Now he is shaping himself into a moderate. The question is not really who voted for him before because he ran as a conservative. Sure, I accept he had the support of centrists. He did that as a conservative. The issue is that he is not the same person he was 4 years ago. And you know who is NOT voting for him? The base.
You think he could have looked back at what Bush senior did…”Read my lips”…and learned from that. Alas, instead he is just going to repeat the mistake.

Andy, I will agree with your statement, but what is a larger factor is tht lack of comunication Pawlenty has had with the Republican Senate and House Caucuses, which is none, and his communications with the any of the Senate/House/County leadership is even less!!!
A leader at any level, is only as good as the people surrounding them. In the case of the Govenor, he needs to look beyond his “advisors” telling him only thier own personal opinions, and talk to the people doing the work.
I would remind the Govenor and every single elected Republican of one simple fact: The party was here before them and will still be here after they are all gone. We gave you our endorsement and got you elected.
I hope they all will remember that we can find plenty of others willing to take our endorsement and our support in November.
