Words To Live By
"The era of small government is over ... government has to be more proactive, more aggressive." ( Tim Pawlenty 2006)

"You're just petty politicians, who'd sooner sign onto the wisdom of a tyrant in another country, than the demands of ticked off voters in your own." (Neil Cavuto June 2008)

“I didn’t question her patriotism. I questioned her judgment.” Mr. Cheney went on: “The point I made and I’ll make it again is that Al Qaeda functions on the basis that they think they can break our will. That’s their fundamental underlying strategy, that if they can kill enough Americans or cause enough havoc, create enough chaos in Iraq, then we’ll quit and go home. And my statement was that if we adopt the Pelosi policy, that then we will validate the strategy of Al Qaeda. I said it, and I meant it.” (Vice President Cheney NYT Feb. 2007)

"A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers. (Ronald Reagan March 1, 1975)

"Oh, no! First of all, if I took one vote away from a serious candidate, it would be a sin." (Al Franken Time Magazine, 9/1/03)

2005 State Fair Impressions

I do not like the State Fair! I hate being in crowds. And I get no satisfaction by walking around the place alone looking at crap. Yes crap, that is what is there, crap.

I do not care what new thing they have crafted to deepfry and jam on a stick. the Midway is full of games and rides that I don’t want to play or ride on. The farm animals are just that, farm animals. I see nothing special about them.

I spent 3 hours at the Taxpayer’s League’s booth in the grandstand today. I volunteered my time. And to those of you with the potty mouth, thanks a bunch. To those who disagreed but came up to ask questions, thank you. That is what politics is about, exchanging ideas, not bomb throwing. Luckily there was plenty of scenery to look at, if you know what I mean.

My biggest overall impression of the State Fair is what is so special about it? Do you need to be fat to enjoy it? They all seemed so happy walking around today. Do you have to have kids? The kids were full of smiles, and so were their parents. Do you have to be in a relationship? It seemed like only couples do go to the Fair. I saw no other singles like myself walking around. Everyone was in groups.

Maybe someone can explain why this is such a big deal, this Fair. I don’t see it. That doesn’t mean I think any one who does is stupid. I think I am, I’m the only person that doesn’t like going there.

One final point, and this will no doubt really upset some. Why does it seem that the Woman at the Fair had a larger circumference than the males? If I was paying close enough attention, there were far more overweight women than men. Why is that?

You can all have your Fair. I don’t see the excitement. Maybe someone can explain it to me.

Nope, can’t explain it. I hate crowds in every other venue — even in concerts that I am attending, the “crowd claustrophobia” often hits — but for some reason the FAIR (and the WI state fair, and Summerfest, and the EAA fly-in in Oshkosh) are totally enjoyable for me. The fact that I am an instinctual people-watcher may have something to do with it, but it doesn’t explain everything.

All that said, the few times I’ve been to the fair for two days, it has started to get old pretty quickly on the second day.
